COURSE WORK

You will also be required to do 2 assignments, one in the first and one in the second semester.

WRITTEN AND ORAL TESTS

The course will cover upper-intermediate grammar as well as linguistic analysis. The written test will focus on translation( Italian- English) and the linguistic analysis of an advertisement. The oral exam depends on the number of credits you require and the degree course you are studying.
For more detailed information on examinations, consult blog post 22nd January,2011, hillansapienza.blogspot.com . The information refers to the last academic year and will shortly be updated and posted on the blogs and the department site.

II YEAR MAGISTRALE

This full-year course, which will be the second year of English Language for some students and the first for others in these combined degree courses, will be taught by Richard Bates and Stephen Wilson. The students will be streamed according to ability (established in a short test at the beginning). The less advanced students will be taught in E1 (Bates) and the more advanced in E2 (Wilson). Information about timetables, examinations and study for these two courses may be found on our web-sites:

www.batessapienza.blogspot.com & www.wilsonsapienza.blogspot.com.

Students should refer to these as a first stop.

Following the European framework, the course will aim to bring students to a C2 level of English by the end of the year. As certain skills are already assumed to have been acquired, much of the course will be based upon improving the students’ current standard of English and will therefore work upon advanced grammar and use of English skills. This will be done using texts in English for advanced (“Proficiency” level), by constant error analysis and by contrastive analysis of Italian and English structures. Many students have competent writing skills and are able to use English which they pitch for their level. Writing will also be encouraged throughout the course, with an emphasis on grammatical and semantic precision. Combined with this, oral summarising skills will be practised, especially during the second semester.

There will be a final written and an oral examination, details of which will be furnished at the beginning of the second semester. Students who attend classes will also be given a mid-course written test on English grammar.
