***!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!***

Since students who took the esonero with me, with Prof Bates & with Prof Leyland are still signing up to sit the examination on 6th June, I REPEAT THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

**N.B. Any student who does not get a minimum of 18 is VERY STRONGLY ADVISED not to take the examination on 6th as a 'non-frequentante' since his or her level of English is unlikely to improve sufficiently within a few days, and it will be a waste of time all round. Similarly, a student who is unhappy with the mark in the 'esonero' and decides to try to improve it in the official examination is also unlikely to improve in the same few days and in any case, the moment the student decides to take the examination, the 'esonero' is no longer valid, even if that mark is higher than that of a subsequent examination. Students with low marks are advised to study over a substantial period before attempting the exam again.

Results of the 3rd year 'esonero', May 2007

Results are given by class number. Details for the oral exams are given below in other postings. You are especially reminded that 18 or over entitles you to complete the exam with the oral part and that you are very strongly advised not to sit the written exam next week if you have a poor mark. See below for details of this. Generally speaking there has been an improvement since the mid-course test.

As these results are late in being issued I have decided that, for a very limited number of students, the oral exam may also be taken at 09.00 on Tuesday 5th June. Please write by email to the above address.

As you can see this is a mixed bunch. I repeat what is said on the previous posting about oral exams. Those who have not passed the 'esonero' or are unsatisfied with their result are VERY STRONGLY advised NOT to sit the oral exam next week. I shall be available through June and much of July to correct written work and advise on fruitful work during the summer vacation.

EXAMS & WORK CORRECTION

I am sorry if this appears negative but it is essential that all students should remember the following.

1) IT IS ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE FOR STUDENTS TO ENROLL FOR WRITTEN EXAMS VIA E-MAIL TO ME (except when specifically asked to do so within the course of the teaching year or on this blog). ALL REQUESTS FOR 'PRENOTAZIONE PER L'ESAME' WILL BE DELETED.

2) I DO NOT CORRECT ANY EXERCISES OR HOMEWORK OF ANY KIND MECHANICALLY VIA INTERNET.

3) I DO NOT CORRECT HOMEWORK FOR EXAMS DURING THE WEEK PRECEDING THE EXAMS EXCEPT BY PRIOR ARRANGEMENT (homework is serious and should be done throughout the year, not at the last minute).

ESONERI & ESAMI

Now that we have got the 'esoneri' out of the way for both the 3rd year and for the 'specialistica', we can concentrate on the oral examination.

Students who get 18/30 or more may take the oral exam**. The exam results will appear here as soon as possible.
The dates for the oral exams for students of my course only are as follows:
3rd year: 30/V @ 09.00; 04/VI @ 09.00; 13/VI @ 09.00; 20/VI @ 09.00.
Specialistica: 28/V @ 09.00; 21/VI @ 09.00.

During the oral examination you may be asked about grammar problems arising from your written paper. You should prepare the rest of the exam as follows.

3rd year: an oral analysis of EITHER two newspaper articles (one from a tabloid, one from a broadsheet), both of the same date and about the same news topic, OR an analysis of the language of an advertisement taken from an actual printed newspaper or magazine. In neither case may you use material from other courses you have attended, and if a newspaper is used it should be from a date during the SEVEN DAYS PRECEDING YOUR ORAL EXAM; if an advertisement, it should be the ACTUAL COPY OF THE ADVERT from the magazine, with a photocopy for the examiner.

Specialistica: an oral analysis of EITHER two newspaper articles (one from a tabloid, one from a broadsheet), both of the same date and about the same news topic, OR an analysis of a political speech you may have found on the internet, but not one which has been discussed by one of your teachers. In neither case may you use material from other courses you have attended, and if a newspaper is used it should be from a date during the SEVEN DAYS PRECEDING YOUR ORAL EXAM; if a political speech, then please bring the print-out from your computer with evidence of where it came from.

Please write to me at wilsonsapienza@blogspot.com to enrol for the oral exam on one of those dates. I shall inform you on the blog when they are full.
