INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ORAL EXAM
(N.B. understanding instructions is a part of the examination)

1) Students MUST have achieved a mark of 18/30 or more in the written paper to be able to take the oral examination.

3) LLM ,LCMM and those MLC students who enrolled at university before 2007 do an oral exam with a lettore as part of lettorato .N.B. STUDENTS HAVE BEEN COMING WITH MAGAZINES INSTEAD OF NEWSPAPERS, WITH MIDDLE MARKET COMPACT NEWSPAPERS INSTEAD OF BROADSHEETS AND/OR. TABLOIDS.
THEY HAVE BEEN SENT AWAY
SARA THORNE'S BOOK IS CLEAR ABOUT BROADSHEET AND TABLOID NEWSPAPERS ON p. 257. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO CHOOSE ONE NEWSPAPER FROM THE QUALITY PRESS AND ONE FROM THE POPULAR PRESS. YOU SHOULD REMEMBER THAT THE  GUIDELINES GIVEN IN THE TEXT BOOK MAY NOT APPLY TO THE ARTICLES YOU CHOOSE AND YOU WILL BE JUDGED ON YOUR ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THIS.

You should choose a news story taken from the English newspapers in the 7 days before the exam, and bring an article on it taken from both a quality broadsheet newspaper and a popular tabloid for purposes of comparative discussion. You MUST bring the newspaper articles themselves as well as a photocopy of them. Do not download the articles from the internet.

L.L.M. students ( NOT M.L.C.) may choose one of the novels from the list below to read and comment on as preparation for  their oral exam :
The Sense of an Ending, Julian Barnes
The Secret Scriptures, Sebastian Barry
The Uncommon Reader, Alan  Bennett
Ordinary Thunderstorms, William Boyd
Chesil Beach, Ian McEwan
Brooklyn, Colm Toibin
THOSE STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE THIS KIND OF EXAMINATION MUST BRING THE NOVEL TO THE EXAM.
N.B. Demonstration of close and detailed knowledge of the text is expected, and not only general critical comment.

4) IMPORTANT ADVICE.
Remember that this is your last examination in English and the level is DEGREE LEVEL. You must not only show fluency but also correct knowledge of grammar.
You are given an opportunity to show your ability, a) in your CHOICE of articles, b) in your skill in understanding the meaning of every word and expression in context in the articles YOU have chosen. If you are unable to do this well you may fail the examination and in that case the rule given in point 2 above will be put into effect: you will have to repeat the written part. The moral is, prepare the examination seriously.
