RESULTS: WRITTEN EXAMS SUMMER 2013

IV year V.O.
CASOLO, F. 606140 - sufficiente (---)

RESULTS III yr
(Summer 2013)

Those students who are interested in percentages will note that approximately 66% (i.e. 2 out of 3) of those who were examined during this session passed the examination, some of them with very high marks. Those who did not pass were often students who, for one reason or another, have not attended either lessons or brought work to be checked during the year. While this is not always the case, it is frequently so.
Since I am on the subject of these exams, students should bear in mind that this is a FINAL EXAM of a degree course in LANGUAGES, and that  DEGREE-LEVEL ENGLISH is required. For, example, it is unacceptable at III year level not to know the word for "German" (it is not Deutsch or Alemann [!]), and it might be expected that a person living in the EU ought to know the English or even German word for Cologne (Köln) and not only the Italian. These are minor points, but are indicative of a certain careless approach to language studies, where communication skills, even in poor English, are considered by many to be sufficient. They are sufficient for those whose ambition is to work in certain sectors of, say, commerce, but not for those who aspire to graduate in languages from an EU university.

Those students who have to do the oral examination with prof. Wardle should enrol through INFOSTUD and should communicate with her via email. The other students on the list (MLC ex-509 and other degree courses) who have 18/30 or over should choose which examination they are going to do with me and write to inform me of their choice (including the name of the novel, if they choose that) and arrange a date during this session. They must read the instructions VERY CAREFULLY. They are required to bring their YELLOW REGISTRATION CARD with them to the oral examination, or they will not be allowed to take it.

Tuesday 18th June from 09.30: Maceroni; NANU;

ALTERNATIVELY
These are details for the alternative oral examination with the lettore and for those who matriculated before 2011-12.
For the (lettorato) oral examination students are required to bring two copies (photocopies) of two articles on the same subject, of their own choice. IF THEY DO NOT BRING LEGIBLE COPIES ALSO FOR THE EXAMINER, THEY WILL NOT DO THE EXAM. One must be from a broadsheet newspaper, the other one from a tabloid. The articles must have been published within the seven days preceding the oral examination. STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE JUDGED ON THEIR ABILITY TO CHOOSE SUITABLE PASSAGES.
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPARE THE LANGUAGE OF THE ARTICLES THAT THEY HAVE CHOSEN. THESE MUST NOT BE TAKEN FROM INTERNET. THERE IS AN AMPLE CHOICE OF NEWSPAPERS IN ROME AND IN LARGE TOWNS.
STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT PREPARED THE EXAMINATION ADEQUATELY WILL NOT PASS THE ORAL PART AND HAVE TO TAKE IT (the oral part) AGAIN IN A FUTURE SESSION (in this case, in September).

Information regarding Oral examinations and resitting the examination.
1) Those students who have enrolled for the examination on Wednesday 5th June and who have decided not to take it because they have passed the esonero are kindly requested to write me an email ( wilsonsapienza@libero.it ) specifying RENUNCIA in the oggetto line so that I open it before the exam, telling me they will not take it.
2) I STRONGLY recommend that those who have passed the esonero should accept the mark and try to improve it during the oral part of the exam rather than resit the examination, because there is no guarantee that you will pass and once the examination has been started, the esonero is no longer valid.
3) MLC = Mediazione Linguistica e (Inter) Culturale
4) LCMM and ex-509 LMC students should write to me specifying ORAL EXAM. These will be next week and the details are below. Those who are laureandi should specify this when they write.

THOSE STUDENTS WHO CHOOSE THIS KIND OF EXAMINATION MUST BRING THE NOVEL TO THE EXAM.
In actual fact, since some students from earlier years will be doing the old kind of oral examination with the lettori, this year's students will also be given the opportunity to choose to do that exam, as described below. They should be aware that this is NOT A SOFT OPTION and should make sure they prepare it well.
These are details for the alternative oral examination with the lettore and for students who matriculated before the 2010-2011 academic year:
For the (lettorato) oral examination students are required to bring two copies (photocopies) of two articles on the same subject, of their own choice. One must be from a broadsheet newspaper, the other one from a tabloid. The articles must have been published within the seven days preceding the oral examination.
