Translating at Halloween

1) Please remember that Halloween comes from the Eve of All Hallows (from 'holy' - All Saints).

2) On this Eve of All Hallows 2008 I have been sent the following text from nearly 60 years ago and I reproduce it here as a suitable practice text for would-be translators.

"Facciamo l'ipotesi, così astrattamente, che ci sia un partito al
potere, un partito dominante, il quale però formalmente vuole
rispettare la Costituzione, non la vuole violare in sostanza. Non
vuole fare la marcia su Roma e trasformare l'aula in un alloggiamento
per manipoli; ma vuole istituire, senza parere, una larvata dittatura.
Allora, che cosa fare per impadronirsi delle scuole e per trasformare
le scuole di stato in scuole di partito? Si accorge che le scuole di
stato hanno il difetto di essere imparziali. C'è una certa resistenza;
in quelle scuole c'è sempre, perfino sotto il fascismo c'è stata.
Allora, il partito dominante segue un'altra strada (è tutta un'ipotesi
teorica, intendiamoci). Comincia a trascurare le scuole pubbliche, a
screditarle, ad impoverirle. Lascia che si anemizzino e comincia a
favorire le scuole private. Non tutte le scuole private. Le scuole del
suo partito, di quel partito. Ed allora tutte le cure cominciano ad
andare a queste scuole private. Cure di denaro e di privilegi. Si
comincia perfino a consigliare i ragazzi ad andare a queste scuole,
perché in fondo sono migliori si dice di quelle di stato. E magari si
danno dei premi a quei cittadini che saranno disposti a mandare i loro
figlioli invece che alle scuole pubbliche alle scuole private. A
"quelle" scuole private. Così la scuola privata diventa una scuola
privilegiata. Il partito dominante, non potendo apertamente
trasformare le scuole di stato in scuole di partito, manda in malora
le scuole di stato per dare la prevalenza alle sue scuole private.
Attenzione, questa è la ricetta. Bisogna tenere d'occhio i cuochi di
questa bassa cucina. L'operazione si fa in tre modi, ve l'ho già
detto: rovinare le scuole di stato. Lasciare che vadano in malora.
Impoverire i loro bilanci. Ignorare i loro bisogni. Attenuare la
sorveglianza e il controllo sulle scuole private. Non controllarne la
serietà. Lasciare che vi insegnino insegnanti che non hanno i titoli
minimi per insegnare. Lasciare che gli esami siano burlette. Dare alle
scuole private denaro pubblico.
Questo è il punto. Dare alle scuole private denaro pubblico"

PRESIDENTE Cossiga, pensa che minacciando l`uso della forza pubblica contro gli studenti Berlusconi abbia esagerato?
«Dipende, se ritiene d`essere il presidente del Consiglio di uno Stato forte, no, ha fatto benissimo. Ma poiché l`Italia è uno Stato debole, e all`opposizione non c`è il granitico Pci ma l`evanescente Pd, temo che alle parole non seguiranno i fatti e che quindi Berlusconi farà una figuraccia».
Quali fatti dovrebbero seguire?
«Maroni dovrebbe fare quel che feci io quand`ero ministro dell`Interno».
Ossia?
«In primo luogo, lasciare perdere gli studenti dei licei, perché pensi a cosa succederebbe se un ragazzino rimanesse ucciso o gravemente ferito...».
Gli universitari, invece?
«Lasciarli fare. Ritirare le forze di polizia dalle strade e dalle università, infiltrare il movimento con agenti provocatori pronti a tutto, e lasciare che per una decina di giorni i manifestanti devastino i negozi, diano fuoco alle macchine e mettano a ferro e fuoco le città».
Dopo di che?
«Dopo di che, forti del consenso popolare, il suono delle sirene delle ambulanze dovrà sovrastare quello delle auto di polizia e carabinieri».
Nel senso che...
«Nel senso che le forze dell`ordine non dovrebbero avere pietà e mandarli tutti in ospedale. Non arrestarli, che tanto poi i magistrati li rimetterebbero subito in libertà, ma picchiarli e picchiare anche quei docenti che li fomentano».
Anche i docenti?
«Soprattutto i docenti».
Presidente, il suo è un paradosso, no?
«Non dico quelli anziani, certo, ma le maestre ragazzine sì. Si rende conto della gravità di quello che sta succedendo? Ci sono insegnanti che in- dottrinano i bambini e li portano in piazza: un atteggiamento criminale!».
E lei si rende conto di quel che direbbero in Europa dopo una cura del genere? «In Italia torna il fascismo», direbbero.
«Balle, questa è la ricetta democratica: spegnere la fiamma prima che divampi l`incendio».
Quale incendio?
«Non esagero, credo davvero che il terrorismo tornerà a insanguinare le strade di questo Paese. E non vorrei che ci si dimenticasse che le Brigate rosse non sono nate nelle fabbriche ma nelle università. E che gli slogan che usavano li avevano usati prima di loro il Movimento studentesco e la sinistra sindacale».
E` dunque possibile che la storia si ripeta?
«Non è possibile, è probabile. Per questo dico: non dimentichiamo che le Br nacquero perché il fuoco non fu spento per tempo».
Il Pd di Veltroni è dalla parte dei manifestanti.
«Mah, guardi, francamente io Veltroni che va in piazza col rischio di prendersi le botte non ce lo vedo. Lo vedo meglio in un club esclusivo di Chicago ad applaudire Obama...».
Non andrà in piazza con un bastone, certo, ma politicamente...
«Politicamente, sta facendo lo stesso errore che fece il Pci all`inizio della contestazione: fece da sponda al movimento illudendosi di controllarlo, ma quando, com`era logico, nel mirino finirono anche loro cambiarono radicalmente registro. La cosiddetta linea della fermezza applicata da Andreotti, da Zaccagnini e da me, era stato Berlinguer a volerla... Ma oggi c`è il Pd, un ectoplasma guidato da un ectoplasma. Ed è anche per questo che Berlusconi farebbe bene ad essere più prudente».

You may notice that some of the stereotype ideas the British have of themselves are negative. This tendency to laugh at themselves is very often not understood by other nationalities and cultures. In fact the Chinese were not at all amused by the UK presentation at the closing ceremony of this year's Olympics, which made fun of British weather, for example. This was much criticised by countries which believe in praising the idea of the state.

Both "Little Britain" and "Fawlty Towers" are available in DVD format.

When considering stereotypes of what is British (remember what I said about Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger NOT being baronets, and about how it is not true that Anglican's do not "believe in" the Virgin Mary), you may like to consider the way in which British people considered the stereotype Italian through history. Try putting "italian/stereotypes" into your search engine (e.g. Google) and see what you find, or simply look at the entry for stereotypes on the wikipedia site.
In the 17th & 18th centuries, Italian often meant effeminate in various ways, as you can see from this MACARONI, an Englishman who has returned from a tour abroad and dresses and behaves in the Italian style.

















Then later on, after poorer Italian immigrants started arriving in Britain in the 19th c., we find this cartoon from a contemporary book for children, portraying a sterotype Italian selling poisonous ice-cream to British children.

The modern stereotypes of Italians which foreigners have tend to fall into three overlapping categories:
a) the Godfather
b) the Foodie
c) the Fashionista












I shall not put the photograph of the "fashionista" on this blog, but those open-minded adults of you who are interested, may ask me for the URL.
